Richmond author James Branch Cabell (1879-1958) is best known for his controversial book, Jurgen (1919), a fantasy set in Cabell's mythical medieval world of Poictesme (pronounced Pwa-tem). The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice contended the book was obscene. A trial over its content brought the reclusive writer national fame. Warren Albert McNeill (1903-1998) was born in Brockton, Mass. in 1903, grew up in Lynchburg, Va., and received B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Richmond. He was a reporter for the Lynchburg News and the Richmond Times-Dispatch in the mid-1920s where he served as city editor before becoming a member of the Associated Press staff in 1930.
